A contemporary American restaurant with a Middle Eastern twist opens today in Washington Square, conveniently close (but not too close) to Fenway Park. Fairsted Kitchen is at 1704 Beacon St. We’re told that it’s inspired by the estate of Frederick Law Olmsted, who designed much of the neighborhood. Prepare for posh surroundings: a communal table complete with a Revolutionary War era footrest; 19th century chandeliers; period wallpaper; and antique china. Oh, and sturgeon.

As for the food: look for small and big plates with Middle Eastern and Eastern European accents. A pig head lettuce wrap, shareable braised oxtail, zabuton steak, stuffed cabbage, za’atar spiced chicken, and grilled sturgeon appear on the debut menu. (Was Olmsted an oxtail lover? We never knew.) Chef Scott Osif was previously at the Galley Beach on Nantucket.

The cocktail menu is also interesting, with bottled, small-batch cocktails, beers from local craft brewer Jack’s Abby, and a mix of wines both familiar (Napa) and far-flung (Croatia).
